What is a Story Producer?

Story producing involves reviewing all raw materials for documentary series, writing notes on the story arcs for each scene, and editing the footage into a coherent narrative. It often involves taking hours of raw footage and cutting it into 5-7 minute scenes. These scenes are then strung together and, under the guidance of the story producer, massaged out and glammed up by an editor who gets down the pacing, adds music, sound effects, andvisual effects, and generally makes the edit smooth. The story producer is also responsible for writing pick-up sound bytes or voice-over narration to connect scenes and visuals with the over-arching storyline.
